Welcome to
The Joseph Whitaker School

The Joseph Whitaker School is located in Rainworth near Mansfield. The school joined the East Midlands Education Trust on the 1st September 2016. We believe that we have a culture and ethos which enables every child to thrive and develop into a confident young adult whilst achieving excellent qualifications in readiness for their future.

We cater for all students’ needs and ambitions, whatever their starting point. Examination outcomes are strong and we offer a broad and balanced curriculum throughout all key stages. In addition to the taught curriculum, we offer a multitude of additional opportunities and hope that your child takes full advantage of the activities that we have to offer.

The Joseph Whitaker School has Specialisms in both Sport and Performing arts. The school became a specialist Sports College in September 2004 and in 2012 the sports specialism was expanded to add focus on performing arts. Our provision, outcomes and commitment to the values and benefits have been recognised nationally. We are a Gold Partner school for the Youth Sport Trust, and the lead school in Nottinghamshire for leadership and volunteering. The skills, self-esteem and opportunities created by the performing arts are seen as vital ingredients in delivering the schools vision.

Day 3 of the A level Biology field trip has seen us out and about near the field centre. We have had a fantastic trip to see farmer Ruth and her longhorn cattle including the very cute 2 day old calf 🐄 then on to a disused quarry to investigate chalkland succession. Finally, before heading home, we went back to the woods to recapture and count our snails. Time for a well earned rest! ... See MoreSee Less

Day 2 of the Y13 Biology Field Trip to North Yorkshire involved firstly a delicious cooked breakfast at the Cranedale Centre, before heading into the woods to recover our humane traps which were set the previous night. Highlights of the captures included a beautiful pill millipede, video evidence of rampaging hedgehogs, and most importantly two field mice and one vole, who were duly named Dobby, Biggie Cheese, and Vector the Vole. A quick dip in the stream to practice our kick sampling was followed by lunch, and then a trip to Filey Brigg to survey a transect of the rocky shore. After dinner we headed back into the woods to capture and mark some banded snails (sepia nemeralis), who we then released and will attempt to recapture tomorrow so we can estimate the population size. ...
