The Joseph Whitaker School became a Specialist Sports College in 2004. The major reasons for the school’s decision to gain specialism in sport was to use our expertise in sport to raise the aspiration, engagement and attainment of all our students, develop our students’ skills in sport and leadership and sustain our belief that by promoting sport in school we are endorsing a lifelong commitment to health and wellbeing. We are a Gold Partner school for the Youth Sport and recognised by the FA as the lead school for Girls football in Newark and Sherwood.
Our aim is to offer a high-quality Physical Education and extra-curricular sporting opportunities to all students no matter their ability, in order to promote health, wellbeing and social inclusion. This extends beyond school to recognised awards such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme where we are a directly licensed centre.
The Sports College has superb facilities and our strong and well-qualified PE department is complemented by part-time sports specific coaches in addition to a School Games Organiser. Working closely with The Youth Sports Trust and other partners such as The FA, we receive additional resources to support our work and benefit our students.

The role of the SGO is to work collaboratively with local primary and secondary schools providing opportunities for young people to participate in sporting events and competitions. In addition, deliver leadership and management for the local school sport partnership, working on cultivating strong links with local partners, schools and sports clubs. There are many leadership opportunities within schools and competitions to inspire our young volunteers, including training and development to widen their experiences in the coordination of sporting events.
