Welcome to
The Joseph Whitaker School

The Joseph Whitaker School is located in Rainworth near Mansfield. The school joined the East Midlands Education Trust on the 1st September 2016. We believe that we have a culture and ethos which enables every child to thrive and develop into a confident young adult whilst achieving excellent qualifications in readiness for their future.

We cater for all students’ needs and ambitions, whatever their starting point. Examination outcomes are strong and we offer a broad and balanced curriculum throughout all key stages. In addition to the taught curriculum, we offer a multitude of additional opportunities and hope that your child takes full advantage of the activities that we have to offer.

The Joseph Whitaker School has Specialisms in both Sport and Performing arts. The school became a specialist Sports College in September 2004 and in 2012 the sports specialism was expanded to add focus on performing arts. Our provision, outcomes and commitment to the values and benefits have been recognised nationally. We are a Gold Partner school for the Youth Sport Trust, and the lead school in Nottinghamshire for leadership and volunteering. The skills, self-esteem and opportunities created by the performing arts are seen as vital ingredients in delivering the schools vision.

The Student Support Centre (SSC) have managed to secure funding through Becky Carr-Smith, the coordinator of Enrichment Partnership Pilot based at Portland College.

This has enabled us to provide enrichment opportunities for our SEND students including educational visits from White Post Farm, training staff to be Forest School Leaders and also improving our gardening area.

Kieran, from Gardens of Giving www.gardensofgiving.com/ spent a week during the Easter holidays creating a wonderful gardening area so that the students can begin growing their own fruit, vegetables and flowers.

The addition of the potting shed has created a space for the students to start off their seeds in preparation to plant outside in the raised planters.

Staff and students have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the transformation and have already started tending to the garden area.

Earlier this week we celebrated the success of our students who this year have achieved the Bronze or Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. To complete any level of this prestigious Award requires commitment and tenacity, and our amazing young people can be very proud of their achievement. Our guest speaker for the evening was Nigel Vardy AKA “Mr Frostbite”, whose recollections of resilience in the face of extreme adversity inspired and entertained students, guests and staff alike.

Well done and congratulations to all! Proud to be Us!

On Wednesday we welcomed Alain ‘Fusion’ Clapham into school, he delivered a motivational assembly to all Year 7 & 8 students.

Students listened as Fusion spoke about his career and who he is inspired by and then students were prompted to think about their futures and what skills they need to reach their goals.

As part of the assembly students wrote poems or raps and some students were brave and read these out to the whole year group.

Well done to everyone who took part!
